Classic grid strategy game

Dots and Boxes

A grid of dots becomes a contest for territory. Dots and Boxes is the classic line-drawing game for 1–2 players, shown as Boxes inside the game.

How to play

Draw a line between neighboring dots. Complete a box to claim it, and keep track of how much of the grid belongs to each player. When the grid fills up, the player who owns the most boxes wins.

The goal is not simply to add lines. Each line changes the shape of the remaining grid, so look at which boxes it moves closer to completion. A nearly finished box can make a small part of the board especially important.

Read the whole grid

Before choosing a line, check nearby boxes and the wider board. Count what is already claimed and watch where the remaining opportunities are forming. As more lines appear, the empty spaces become easier to compare.

Unlike a race to a single finishing square, the result depends on the total number of boxes claimed by the time the board is full.
